Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)
Insemination (IUI) is the simplest form of fertility therapy. For the treatment the prepared sperm is injected directly into the uterus on the day of ovulation using a fine catheter. This way the sperm is put in more close proximity to the egg and natural conception can be facilitated.
Insemination can be helpful
- in case of infertilty without recognizable causes
- if the sperm quality is only slightly reduced
- if the couple can not have intercourse for any reason
- if donor sperm is used
Treatment procedure
Insemination can be done during the natural cycle or with mild hormonal support. The first examination normally takes place on the day 9th-11th of the menustral cycle (depending on the cycle length). After examining the ovaries and uterus by ultrasound and evaluation of the hormones in your blood, we will be able to assure that the egg is ready for ovulation and thus for fertilization. In most cases, the time of insemination can be determined on the first appointment, so no second doctor visit is required. The exact timing of ovulation is determined by using a hormonal trigger injection (injection of HCG). The insemination takes place on the day of ovulation.
If you have a longer journey to our fertility center, you can have the ultrasound examination and blood analysis performed by your gynecologist and send us the result by fax. However, the results of the examination should be available no later than 12pm so that we can plan your treatment correctly.
Preparation of the sperms
On the day of the planned insemination (IUI), the semen sample must be provided by your partner in our clinic about 90 min before the scheduled IUI. Then the sample will be prepared to have highest possible percentage of mobile and healthy sperms.
The insemination
The processed sperms will be transferred directly into the uterine cavity by means of a fine, soft catheter. The treatment only takes a few minutes and is not painful. After a short rest you can continue with your normal daily activities. To optimize the therapy and support the implantation and pregnancy, progesterone supplement is often prescribed which must be used every evening after insemination until the day of pregnancy test.
Pregnancy test is done about 14 days after insemination. If you became pregnant, the progesterone supplement should be taken until the end of the third month of pregnancy.
